Mumbai Battles Heavy Rain: IMD Orange Alert, Travel Warnings, and Wet Weather Forecast Wave

August 18, 2025

Mumbai is under a heavy rain spell! The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall from Monday through Tuesday. This means the rain isn’t just a passing shower—it’s a serious downpour that demands attention! In response, major airlines like IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India have jumped in with travel advisories. IndiGo tweeted, "Mumbai is still under a blanket of rain, and the roads are moving at a gentler pace than usual. Waterlogging has been reported in parts of the city, especially on key airport routes. If you are travelling to the airport, we encourage you to plan ahead and check your flight status on our app and website before stepping out." So if you’re flying, better double-check your flight status and allow extra time to reach the airport! Looking at the week ahead, the wet drama continues. According to the IMD’s five-day forecast, Mumbai will see rainfall almost every day. Here’s the juicy weather menu: - Monday: 47.6 mm of rain, temperatures between 25.2°C and 26°C - Tuesday: Heavy showers at 119.61 mm, winds gusting up to 37.4 km/h - Wednesday: 93.32 mm rainfall with winds peaking at 39.2 km/h - Thursday: The rain eases a bit to 22.8 mm; a warm 27.7°C max temperature - Friday: Light showers of just 3.88 mm, temperatures between 26.3°C and 28°C - Saturday: Moderate showers return with 7.1 mm expected Last Sunday was no joke either. Temperatures hovered around a cool 25.1°C to 25.7°C, humidity hit 90%, and winds blew at 27.4 km/h. The Santacruz observatory alone clocked 85 mm of rain by early morning, while Colaba recorded 55 mm. The day after a drenched Saturday where Santacruz saw a whopping 245 mm and Colaba 85 mm! The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s weather systems revealed that many parts of the city crossed the 100 mm rainfall mark in 24 hours. Western suburbs soaked up an average of 104 mm, the island city got 93 mm, and the eastern suburbs saw 78 mm. Hotspots included Charkop with 190 mm, Anand Nagar in Dahisar at 188 mm, and Borivali recording 168 mm. Eastern suburbs like Powai and Bhandup also got soaked with 134 mm and 129 mm respectively. Even the island city’s Fort (134 mm), Cotton Green (132 mm), and Grant Road (129 mm) reported heavy rains. Bottom line? Mumbai is soaked, and the skies aren’t ready to give us a break yet. Residents and travelers should stay alert, plan travels carefully, and keep an umbrella handy for a rainy, slippery week ahead!
