Mumbai Hits Red Alert! Heavy Rain, Waterlogging & Travel Chaos Dominate the City

August 18, 2025

Mumbai is facing a red alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), signaling heavy to very heavy rainfall that is disrupting the city’s rhythm! On Monday, the IMD upgraded the weather warning from an orange to a red alert, meaning the rain will pour hard and fast. This alert covers Mumbai and nearby districts like Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, where the showers are expected to be relentless. Even Ratnagiri was slapped with a red alert, while Sindhudurg stays in orange. The rain isn’t easing up anytime soon. IMD predicts Mumbai’s wet week will stretch till at least August 21, with days filled with cloudy skies and heavy showers that sometimes get intense. From August 17 to 22, it’s a non-stop shower party with some days drenched more than others. Mumbai’s daily life is taking a hit. Schools and colleges are closed to keep kids safe from the storm’s wrath. Many morning schools dismissed students early while afternoon shifts are off the books due to severe waterlogging caused by the rains. Commuters are battling tough times too. The heavy downpour flooded railway tracks, delaying suburban trains on the Central and Harbour lines, especially between Kurla and Dadar and near Chunabhatti station. Trains crawled slowly as water submerged tracks, making passengers wait longer. Bandra and Andheri, two busy city spots, are drowning! Bandra station is underwater with platforms swamped, while Andheri’s famous West subway on SV Road turned into a knee-deep swimming pool after a motor pump failed. Vehicles stalled and people waded through waist-high water to get around. Flight travelers, listen up! IndiGo and Akasa Air have rushed out advisories. Waterlogged roads on key airport routes could cause delays. Both airlines ask passengers to plan much earlier and check their flight status on apps or websites to avoid last-minute surprises. To sum it up, Mumbai and its neighbors are in for several more days of heavy rain and water woes. The IMD warns everyone to stay alert, stay safe, and prepare for a wet, wet monsoon season that’s showing no signs of backing off soon!
