Rubio Says US Will Keep Trying for Peace in Ukraine, But War May Drag On

August 18, 2025

The United States is still working hard to try and stop the Russia-Ukraine war, but there is no guarantee it will happen soon. On Sunday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told CBS in an interview on "Face the Nation" that the peace process might fail. "If peace is not going to be possible here and this is just going to continue on as a war, people will continue to die by the thousands ... we may unfortunately wind up there, but we don't want to wind up there," Rubio said, warning that the fight could go on with heavy loss of life. In the coming days, European leaders will travel with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to meet US President Donald Trump in Washington. This meeting aims to support Zelenskiy as Trump pushes Ukraine to accept a fast peace deal after his own talks with Russian leader Vladimir Putin last Friday. Rubio added, "There are things that were discussed as part of this meeting that are potentials for breakthroughs, that are potential for progress." Key points will include plans to give Ukraine security guarantees to protect its future. Sources reveal that during the Trump-Putin meeting, they talked about Russia giving up small parts of the land it has occupied in Ukraine. In exchange, Ukraine might give up some fortified areas in the east and agree to freeze current front lines in other places. Rubio stressed that "both sides would need to make concessions" for any peace deal to work. With tension high and so much at stake, all eyes will be on the talks in Washington this week. Can these leaders find a way out of a bloody war? Or will the battle sadly continue, claiming many more lives?
