Say goodbye to cheap vehicle registrations for old rides! The government has just upped the charges for renewing registration of vehicles older than 20 years — and almost doubled them. Why? To stop people from driving old, polluting vehicles that make a big mess of our air. Did you know vehicular pollution is responsible for 40% of pollution in India? That’s a huge chunk! Here’s what the government has done: renewal fees for motorcycles older than 20 years jumped from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000. Three-wheelers saw their fees go up from Rs 3500 to Rs 5000. Light motor vehicles (LMVs) now cost a whopping Rs 10,000 to renew. Imported two or three-wheelers? Their fees doubled to Rs 20,000! And hold on, imported old cars shot up from Rs 10,000 to Rs 80,000! That’s a massive jump. Imported motorcycles and cars have also become more expensive, with fees going up to Rs 40,000. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways made it clear in their notification on August 20, 2025: "All fees specified are exclusive of Goods and Services Tax." This move is not sudden. Back in February, the ministry had floated a draft amendment to shift the age limit from 15 to 20 years for higher registration fees. It’s about time we phase out vehicles made before the BS-II emission rules came into play. These old vehicles are pollution troublemakers! Last time the fees went up was in October 2021, under the vehicle scrappage policy, affecting two- and three-wheelers, quadricycles, and LMVs. This fresh hike keeps up the pressure to discourage old, toxic vehicles and clean the air we breathe. So, if your vehicle is a vintage on wheels, think twice before renewing! The government’s message is loud and clear: cleaner air, fewer old polluting vehicles.
