Hold onto your hats, America! US President Donald Trump is turning his crime-fighting spotlight on Chicago, Illinois, the Democrat-ruled city known for political drama and tough issues. After praising the "incredible" work of the National Guard in Washington, DC, Trump wants to roll out the same safety formula in the Windy City. At a high-energy news conference in the Oval Office on August 22, 2025, Trump beamed about the National Guard’s partnership with police in DC. “The National Guard has done such an incredible job working with the police,” he said, as reported by ABC News. And here’s the punchline: "After we do this, we'll go to another location, and we'll make it safe also. We're going to make our country very safe. We're going to make our cities very, very safe." Guess who’s next? Trump hinted strongly it’s Chicago. Calling the city a “mess” and accusing the Democratic leaders of failure, he boldly claimed people there are "screaming" for help. “African American ladies, beautiful ladies, are saying, 'Please, President Trump, come to Chicago, please,'” he added. Trump also boasted, “I did great with the Black vote.” The president’s plan isn’t just about crime; he wants to tackle homelessness and illegal immigration in Chicago too. He even mentioned that New York might get similar treatment later. Trump’s move comes just as the Pentagon encouraged troops in Washington to carry firearms, although no clear threats have emerged. But what about the facts on the ground? Chicago police numbers tell an interesting story: overall crime is down 13% compared to last year, with murders and robberies dropping even more—31% and 33%, respectively. Compared to 2021, crime is up 40%, but murders and robberies have shown big declines. Has Trump started sending troops to Chicago already? Not yet. He called Mayor Brandon Johnson “grossly incompetent” and said, “When we're ready, we'll go ahead.” Trump spoke fondly of Chicago too, calling it “our greatest city” and even bragging about owning “the most beautiful building in Chicago.” Still, he didn’t hide his sadness over how the city is doing. Mayor Brandon Johnson fired back, saying his office hasn’t received any official word about military moves. He warned that deploying National Guard troops without approval would be "uncoordinated, uncalled for, and unsound." Johnson fears such actions could stir up tensions between residents and police, especially since federal power is limited in Chicago compared to DC’s home rule laws. So, will Chicago see a National Guard crackdown like Washington? The drama is far from over. For now, Trump is setting the stage with bold promises and criticism, while local leaders brace for what’s next in this high-stakes showdown for city safety.
