Trump Cheers Ukraine's Unbreakable Spirit on 34th Independence Day Amid Tense Conflict

August 25, 2025

Ukraine lit up the world stage on its 34th Independence Day with bold messages of courage and hope from global leaders. Among the cheers, former US President Donald Trump sent a heartfelt letter praising Ukraine's "unbreakable spirit" and the nation's bravery under pressure, CNN reported. Sharing Trump's inspiring words on X, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy replied, "We will not lose." The war drums, however, have not silenced. The conflict rages on as both Ukraine and Russia keep trading strikes. Russia claimed it shot down a Ukrainian drone near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant, causing damage to a transformer, but Ukraine's authorities have yet to comment. Leaders like Chinese President Xi Jinping, King Charles III of Britain, and Pope Leo XIV also sent strong messages celebrating Ukraine's day. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney marked the day with his first official visit to Ukraine, posting on X that Canada's support is "unwavering, and we are with you every step of the way in your fight to defend your sovereignty." Even Keith Kellogg, the Trump administration's envoy for Russia-Ukraine affairs, attended Kyiv's celebrations, showing international solidarity. Trump's message came just after he announced giving Putin "a couple of weeks" to respond, pushing for a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy to find peace. In his letter, Trump underscored that the US honors Ukraine's sacrifices and backs a negotiated settlement to stop the bloodshed and protect Ukraine's sovereignty. Zelenskyy thanked Trump and delivered a powerful speech to his people, promising that Ukraine will celebrate its Independence Day a hundred years from now. He declared, "Ukraine is stronger and has self-respect. And Ukraine does not wait for gestures of goodwill, but it has its own will to put into life what is necessary for us." He emphasized that Ukraine will never accept a "compromise" that shames its history and that "Our future will be decided by us alone. And the world knows it." This Independence Day was not just a celebration, but a bold statement of defiance and hope from a nation fighting to remain free and sovereign.
