Calcutta High Court Rejects CBI Probe, Hands Over East Midnapore Murder Case to Bengal CID

August 27, 2025

In a fiery courtroom drama straight from Kolkata, the Calcutta High Court on Monday described the much-talked-about CBI probes as nothing more than "a gallery show right now." The court slammed a request for a CBI investigation into the mysterious deaths of two youths in East Midnapore back in July. Instead, Justice Tirthankar Ghosh declared he would hand over the probe to the Bengal CID, removing it from the local police station. The chilling case involves the deaths of Sujit Das, aged 22, and Sudhir Chandra Paik, who died during a social event at Khejuri on July 12. While the local cops initially said electrocution caused the deaths, Sujit’s father, Sasanka, claimed his son was brutally beaten by Trinamool supporters—and the local police were hiding the culprits. The BJP even called for a local shutdown after the tragedy. Two autopsies sparked more suspicion: the first, done at a district hospital in Tamluk, said electrocution was the cause. But a second autopsy at SSKM Hospital pointed to assault, highlighting bruise marks all over Sujit’s body. Sasanka’s lawyer, Mayukh Mukherjee, pleaded for a fair and transparent probe by the CBI, insisting the family had no faith in local police. But Justice Ghosh was firm: “The CBI is a gallery show right now. If I give CBI, it will just be a gallery show.” Instead, the judge assured, “I am taking it out of the local police station and giving it to the CID.” The CID’s additional director-general will form a special investigation team. This squad will be led by a deputy inspector-general and will include officers from the CID homicide section. The judge also pointed to the two autopsy reports as reasons that weaken the accused persons’ case. Justice Ghosh told Mukherjee that if the family felt unhappy with the decision, they could approach the High Court’s division bench, but “I will not give it to a central agency.” The final order is expected to come on Tuesday. This case remains hot as political drama heats up and justice hangs in the balance. Will Bengal CID find the truth behind these unsettling deaths? The state watches closely.
