Boom! Magnitude 6.0 Earthquake Rocks Afghanistan, Delhi-NCR Feels the Shake

September 1, 2025

Hold tight! A powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook southeastern Afghanistan this Sunday, sending tremors all the way to Delhi-NCR and other parts of India. According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), making its impact even stronger on the surface. The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), a trusted science body, said the earthquake hit 28 km northwest of Bāsawul in Afghanistan at 11:47:36 PM local time. Social media users jumped online to share the surprise. One user wrote, “Felt the tremors just now in Delhi-NCR. Lasted a few seconds but quite noticeable.” Another user shared a shaky video showing a ceiling fan swinging during the tremors, proving the ground really moved! Afghanistan isn’t new to such shakes. The Hindu Kush mountain range is a hotbed for earthquakes because it sits on several fault lines where the huge Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Interestingly, a fault line runs right through the city of Herat, too. This natural tectonic turmoil means Afghanistan experiences frequent quakes, which can be dangerous for its people. Adding spice to the story, just last month, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the area at a much deeper level of 87 km on August 2. Then another quake, 4.2 in magnitude, trembled the region on August 6. But why are shallow earthquakes like Sunday’s more fearsome? Because their seismic waves travel a shorter distance to the surface, causing stronger ground shaking, more damage to buildings, and sadly, more injuries. The frequent rattles worry experts as Afghanistan’s communities are already vulnerable after many years of conflict and under-development. They have little strength left to face so many shocks at once. This recent event serves as a reminder of the natural challenges faced by this mountainous region. Stay tuned and stay safe, because in areas where the Earth loves to dance, every tremor tells a powerful story!
