Hold your breath! Russia’s long-range drone strikes on Ukraine took a surprising dip in August, dropping by 34% compared to July’s intense attacks, says new data by the Ukrainian air force. Even though drone strikes slowed down, Russia didn’t stop its deadly game. August saw nearly 4,132 drones launched overnight, down from July’s record-breaking numbers, but still enough to create havoc. What caused this sudden drop? Many fingers point to the whirlwind meetings between world leaders including US President Donald Trump, Russia's Vladimir Putin, and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky. These high-profile talks aimed to end the grinding war, but sadly, no breakthrough was made. Despite the fall in drone numbers, Moscow’s forces launched some 156 missile attacks across August, keeping the pressure fierce. The worst hit was Kyiv on August 28, when a brutal drone and missile barrage killed 25 innocent people. AFP journalists saw heart-wrenching scenes as families wept, burying a 24-year-old woman and her 2-year-old daughter torn from life by the bombardment. Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, the sky over Ukraine has been a battlefield every single night. There has not been a night without a Russian long-range drone strike since May! This makes the conflict the deadliest in Europe since World War II. Ukrainian air defence teams are not sitting still — they’re learning fast, adapting to the increasingly clever and massive attacks. But the Ukrainian air force warns that the official numbers only show part of this grim picture. They believe the real number of Russian attacks is even higher, painting a harsh reality of endless war roaring through the night skies.
