Prime Minister Narendra Modi let out a subtle yet powerful message on Tuesday that seemed to be aimed at the high tariffs imposed by former US President Donald Trump. Speaking at the Semicon India 2025 event in Delhi, Modi said, "Once again, India has performed better than every expectation, every assessment. At a time when there are concerns in the economy of the world, there are challenges created by economic selfishness; in that environment, India has achieved a growth of 7.8 per cent." This growth year-on-year for April to June is a fantastic feat as India’s economy expanded more than experts predicted, despite the obstacles. The 7.8% growth is the highest India has seen in five quarters, even as the US imposed hefty tariffs on Indian goods. To remind everyone, Donald Trump slapped a shocking 50% tariff on Indian imports to the US in August. First, there was a 25% tariff announced, followed by an additional 25% as a penalty due to India's oil dealings with Russia. India has firmly called these duties "unjustified." At the event, Modi also made a proud moment for India by accepting the first made-in-India semiconductor chips, signaling a big leap in the country's tech ambitions. He said the world trusts India and is eager to partner with the nation to build the future of semiconductors. This indirect dig at Trump’s "Make America Great Again" tariff policies brought a strong message: India is growing big and strong, regardless of economic selfishness around the world. The takeaway? India is not just surviving, it’s thriving with a 7.8% GDP surge, showing the global economy that it’s a force to reckon with!
