Get ready for a real-life thriller! Kolkata’s legendary gun shop, Nursing Chunder Daw & Co., has been caught in a storm of illegal arms trade. Police action came smashing down after the Special Task Force (STF) arrested three owners – brothers Subir Daw, Abhir Daw, and Subrata Daw. This is no ordinary shop—they hail from one of North Kolkata’s oldest aristocratic families, running the business since 1835 right in the bustling Dalhousie area, just a stone’s throw from Kolkata Police headquarters! Though the shop has a government license and should be watched closely by police, the illegal arms racket thrived behind the scenes. It all came to light after cops found a big stock of illegal guns at Rahara, Khardah, last month. They traced those guns straight back to Nursing Chunder Daw & Co., triggering raids and arrests on September 4, 2025. Superintendent of Police Indrajit Basu, leading the STF probe, dropped a bombshell: “There were 41 guns, including single-barrelled and double-barrelled firearms, which were seized from Daw’s shop. During the raids, they could not find any record of these guns.” Sounds like the perfect recipe for trouble! The brothers were taken into custody and appeared in court the very next day. They have been sent to police custody for seven days as the investigation heats up. But that’s not all—allegations say many bullets and licensed guns were secretly sold at hefty prices to unauthorized buyers, while arm owners’ guns were illegally resold. The Rahara raid uncovered a scary cache of weapons—14 guns and rifles, 905 bullets of all sizes, bolt-action rifles, 9mm and 7mm pistols, and revolvers—all traced to this old gun shop’s network. Remember earlier this year in February? Two employees from the same shop, Jayanta Dutta and Santanu Sarkar, were arrested over similar illegal arms trade charges. Police suspected the rackets from these arrests and found that many bullets used in shootouts across Bengal came right from inside the state—and from this business! The shop had been sealed before but reopened recently, only to be shut down again with this dramatic arrest drama. The tale of this ancient gun shop turned illegal arms hub is turning heads and raising big questions about police oversight. How did it all slip through the cracks near police HQ? The full story is still unfolding, but one thing is clear: the bullets are flying in the legal fight to stop illegal arms trade in Kolkata!
