Bombay High Court Bans Cognizant’s Logo in India Amid Trademark Battle with Bengaluru Firm

September 8, 2025

In a stunning legal drama, the Bombay High Court has dealt a big blow to IT giant Cognizant by ordering it to stop using its logo in India. This order came after Bengaluru’s fintech firm Atyati Technologies filed a trademark infringement suit. The court has brought back an earlier ban, demanding that Cognizant must not display the disputed logo until the court case is decided.

Following the court’s command, Cognizant quickly removed its honeycomb-style logo from its Indian website. The logo has also vanished from popular social media channels like Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and X (which was Twitter before). Instead of the logo, the company is now showing only its name across these platforms.

Trademark Clash Over Honeycomb Design

The heart of this legal tussle is a hexagonal honeycomb logo. Atyati Technologies claims it started using this unique design in 2019. They say Cognizant copied this look in 2022, which caused confusion among customers. Earlier in June 2024, Cognizant enjoyed a temporary win allowing logo use. But now, the March 2024 injunction is back in power, stopping the logo use while the case is ongoing.

Cognizant Pushes Back

Despite obeying the latest court order, Cognizant is not backing down. As Economic Times reported, a company spokesperson said, “We are complying with the Order of the Division Bench of the Bombay High Court. We are doing so while we consider our options for redress.” They added, “We strongly believe that our actions have been lawful and appropriate, and we are confident that the legal process will affirm our position and deliver a just outcome.” Bold words that hint this fight is far from over!

Cognizant’s Legal Rollercoaster

This isn’t Cognizant’s first legal headache. Over recent years, it faced several disputes involving employee poaching and alleged intellectual property troubles. Remember September 2023, when Cognizant hired Wipro’s former CFO Jatin Dalal? That led Wipro to sue Dalal for breaking a non-compete agreement and asked for Rs 25.1 crore! The dust settled with Cognizant paying Rs 4.2 crore for Dalal’s legal fees.

A month later, in December 2023, tensions flared again when Mohd Ehteshamul Haque, former head of healthcare at Wipro, joined Cognizant as chief commercial officer for the Americas. This clash was also quietly settled.

And the saga continues! Cognizant is locked in a major legal battle with Infosys. The rival firm accuses Cognizant of stealing software secrets to create a competing healthcare product — even naming Cognizant’s CEO S Ravi Kumar in the case. Cognizant denies these claims firmly.

In a twist, a Dallas court in May 2025 told both parties to talk first and clear the confusion before the trial moves ahead. Keep your popcorn ready; this legal battle looks like a blockbuster in the IT world!
