Delhi’s Air Quality Hits ‘Satisfactory’ at 79 as Thunderstorms Loom Today

September 8, 2025

Delhi’s air got a little breather on Monday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) settling at a pleasant 79 at 9 am. This places the city’s air quality in the ‘satisfactory’ category, making it easier to breathe compared to the usual smog. The Central Pollution Control Board shared these figures, reminding us how AQI works: zero to 50 is ‘good,’ 51 to 100 ‘satisfactory,’ 101 to 200 ‘moderate,’ and it goes all the way up to ‘severe’ at 401-500. On the weather front, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a minimum temperature of 23.9 degrees Celsius on Monday morning. Interestingly, this is 1.7 degrees below the usual temperature for this season, bringing a mild chill to the capital. At 8:30 am, humidity levels were quite high at 87 percent, hinting at damp air. And the big talk of the day is the weather forecast! Hold onto your umbrellas because the IMD has predicted thunderstorms accompanied by rain throughout the day. The mercury is expected to climb to a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius, making the rain a welcome relief from the heat. In short, Delhiites can enjoy somewhat cleaner air and a refreshing wet spell today. With such a delightful mix of ‘not too hot’ temperatures and a thunderstorm party, it's a day to experience the true flavour of the season.
