India is mulling over a significant increase in utilizing water from the Indus river system, a move that might substantially diminish water supply to Pakistan. This step follows heightened tensions post a deadly terror attack by Pakistan-backed terrorists. India had earlier suspended its participation in the Indus Waters Treaty, and now, amidst a suspension of the ceasefire agreement, is moving ahead with its water projects, notably focusing on the Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus rivers. This strategic move includes expanding the Ranbir Canal on the Chenab river, aiming to double its length and increase water diversion capacity significantly. By exploring various irrigation and hydropower initiatives in northern Indian states, India intends to reduce water flow to Pakistan. The impact of these actions could be severe on Pakistan, as the country heavily depends on the Indus river system for agriculture and energy needs. Pakistan strongly condemns these moves, warning of possible repercussions on the already strained India-Pakistan relationship. The Indus Waters Treaty, a historic agreement between the two countries, faces uncertainty as India takes a firm stance on water control.
