NEW DELHI: Cricket fans, get ready for some spicy action in the Asia Cup! Former Sri Lanka cricketer Russel Arnold is buzzing with hope and fire, saying Sri Lanka can take on India and maybe even surprise them in the Super 4s stage. Arnold, a seasoned player with 44 Tests and 180 ODIs under his belt, knows a thing or two about the thrill of beating India, calling it a joy like no other. With the Asia Cup on, India sits in Group B with Pakistan, Oman, and UAE, while Sri Lanka is quarreling it out in Group A alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong. Arnold tells TimesofIndia.com, “Sri Lanka stand a good chance. It’s going to be very competitive with Bangladesh and Afghanistan playing superb cricket. But India will probably be the team to beat.” Who's Sri Lanka’s trump card? Arnold picks: - Pathum Nissanka, to give a fiery start; - Kamindu Mendis, settling nicely at number seven and ready to hit big; - Dushmantha Chameera, the bowler who is fit and ready to rock. Why has Sri Lanka slipped from their glory days? Arnold points out inconsistency and a lack of team depth. Unlike India, who can rest players without worry, Sri Lanka's injuries hit hard, shaking their rhythm. Arnold longs for the good old days when India and Sri Lanka clashed frequently. “It was always interesting and challenging,” he says. But today's jam-packed cricket calendar and flashy franchise leagues leave little room for such regular battles. Still, Arnold insists, “Playing India benefits everyone. India have set the bar so high, and there’s a lot other teams can learn from them.” As for players choosing franchises over country, Arnold is understanding: “Players have to make the best decision for themselves and their families. The game has changed, and so have the rewards.” The icing on the cake? The legendary Sanath Jayasuriya becoming Sri Lanka’s coach! Arnold hopes his passion lifts the team, but warns, “Consistency is what’s required.” The Asia Cup is more than just a tournament; it’s a perfect dress rehearsal for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next year. When asked about last Asia Cup where India’s Mohammed Siraj tore through Sri Lanka’s batting, Arnold is optimistic: “They’ve learned from their mistakes. It won’t be as easy this time.” And his favorite memory against India? That iconic Sharjah match where Jayasuriya smashed 189 and Sri Lanka bowled India out cheaply – a moment Arnold calls "very special." In short, this Asia Cup promises fiery battles, stunning surprises, and a thrilling cricket spectacle. With Arnold’s insights, fans can’t wait to see if Sri Lanka can bring the heat to India’s doorstep!
