In a heartfelt call on Thursday, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Nepal's new interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki. Modi expressed deep sympathy for the tragic loss of life during violent protests shaking Nepal. He told Karki: "Had a warm conversation with Mrs. Sushila Karki, Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. Conveyed heartfelt condolences on the recent tragic loss of lives and reaffirmed India's steadfast support for her efforts to restore peace and stability." The tension in Nepal comes after fierce protests led by the Gen Z movement, which caused major destruction — including burning government buildings, Parliament, and political leaders' homes. These protests even forced out former PM K P Sharma Oli. Modi didn't stop there. He also sent warm greetings to the people of Nepal for their National Day tomorrow to strengthen the friendship between the two neighbors. In response, PM Sushila Karki thanked Modi for India's firm support and shared encouraging news about Nepal’s future. According to Nepal's Foreign Ministry, she said, "The election will remain the top priority of the present government, with a strong determination for accountable, responsive, and corruption-free governance, reflecting the aspirations of the youth." Karki also sent birthday wishes to PM Modi for his 75th birthday, appreciating his message of solidarity. Their chat ended on a positive note, agreeing to stay in close touch. Karki assumed office on September 12 and will serve until March 2026 when elections are set to choose a new leader. This promises a fresh chapter for Nepal, with the world's youngest generation pushing for honest governance. Through thick and thin, India stands with Nepal in this journey towards peace and progress.
