Vedanta’s Anil Agarwal Sounds Alarm on Copper Craze Driven by AI, Green Energy & Defence

September 19, 2025

Hold on tight! Copper is the new superstar metal that everyone wants. Vedanta’s big boss, Anil Agarwal, on Thursday spilled the beans on why the world is madly craving copper. It’s not just the push for clean energy that’s making copper shine; thanks to artificial intelligence and growing military budgets, the red metal is hotter than ever! "The World is Crazy for Copper" Agarwal wrote on his X account, giving us a sneak peek into the frenzy. AI data centres gobble up tons of power and need copper for cooling and running their machines. Defence tech, from missile systems to jet fighters, is also snapping up copper like never before. But here’s the twist – the world’s copper demand will soon outpace supply, Agarwal warned. For India, this is a golden chance to pump up its production and cut down on imports. Backing his words, he shared a spicy Wall Street Journal report titled “Mining Megadeal Shows the World Is Crazy for Copper”. It talks about a whopping $53 billion mega-merger between mining giants Anglo American and Teck Resources, betting big on copper’s bright future. BloombergNEF’s numbers are jaw-dropping – AI data centres alone will need over 4.3 million metric tons of copper in the next ten years! That’s almost the entire yearly copper supply from Chile, the world’s top copper king. Military spending will push the demand even higher. Despite all the talk about metal substitutes, copper remains the MVP for the global energy switch and the mining industry’s biggest deals. So, copper isn’t just a metal; it’s the backbone of our clean, tech-driven, and secure future!
