Coimbatore Corporation Cracks Down After Shocking Viral Video Shows Stray Dog Abuse by NGO Staff

September 19, 2025

Coimbatore is in a storm after a shocking video of a stray dog being mistreated went viral online. The video shows a man grabbing a dog in a rough way, pulling its leg, and throwing it into a net. Even worse, another person is seen telling team members to throw stones at the dogs and hit them! This happened during a dog-catching drive at Sai Garden in ward 87. The angry town corporation is now planning to take strict action against Prani Mithran, the NGO responsible for running the animal birth control (ABC) centre in Vellalore. This NGO has the contract to manage the stray dog sterilization there. Animal lovers and activists are furious. They fear the people catching the dogs may not have the right training or skills. One anonymous animal rescuer even worried about what might be happening inside the ABC centre, saying that if these untrained workers are handling the dogs badly, how can the sterilization be safe or proper? Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran spoke out clearly about the next steps. He said, "Besides filing a police complaint, the corporation would insist on providing proper training to all personnel involved in the dog-catching." He stressed the importance of "the correct use of equipment and humane handling of stray dogs" to stop such horrible incidents from happening again. This controversy has put the spotlight on how stray dogs are treated in Coimbatore — and set the stage for stricter control and better care for the city's furry friends!
