A Night Full of Surprises in Tokyo The men’s javelin final at the World Championships in Tokyo blew everyone away! Curtis Thompson of the USA soared to bronze with an 86.67m throw, making him the first American male to earn a medal in this event since 2007. What a moment to remember! The contest on September 18 was packed with excitement and surprises. The gold medal went to Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott after a stunning 88.16m throw. Not far behind, Grenada’s Anderson Peters claimed silver with 87.38m. India’s Sachin Yadav gave a strong performance, almost reaching the podium with 86.27m. Meanwhile, Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, shockingly, finished eighth and tenth. Thompson’s very first throw, 86.67m, was his best and it stayed as the winning mark for bronze. This throw finally ended the long 17-year wait for Team USA to win a medal in an event long dominated by Europeans and Caribbean athletes. Who is Curtis Thompson? Born on February 8, 1996, in Trenton, New Jersey, Curtis Thompson was a sports star from the start. In high school at Florence Township Memorial, he excelled in football and basketball but truly shined in track and field. He even set a New Jersey state record with a massive 68.53m javelin throw and was crowned the 2014 Gatorade Athlete of the Year for male track and field. Patience and Persistence Built His Career Thompson’s journey wasn’t a quick climb! Twice an Olympian (Tokyo 2020 and qualified for Paris 2024), he competed at many world events before finally breaking through at the 2025 World Championships. Despite being a five-time U.S. National Champion, international medals had slipped just out of reach for years. His 2018 USATF win started the momentum, but it took steady grit and determination to shine on the global stage. With another national title in 2025 and now this stunning World Championship bronze, Thompson has made U.S. javelin history. This medal lights up a new era for America in this fierce event. Beyond the medal, it celebrates a dream that began back in New Jersey and now places Curtis Thompson’s name among the greats in world athletics. USA fans can cheer — the javelin spotlight is back!
