The Union Budget for 2025-26 has allocated Rs 1,777 crore for Mumbai Urban Transport Projects (MUTP), a significant increase from the previous year. The state government is expected to match this amount, bringing the total funding to Rs 3,554 crore for the year. This boosted allocation is intended to assist ongoing suburban railway infrastructure projects under MUTP, aimed at enhancing network efficiency, reducing congestion, and upgrading passenger facilities. Officials from the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) highlighted that there were no fund shortages in the last fiscal year (2024-25), ensuring uninterrupted progress on various MUTP components. If necessary, additional funds are typically provided through revised estimates in the final quarter of the financial year. Vilas Wadekar, Chairman and Managing Director of MRVC, emphasized that the funding will help maintain progress on key projects such as new railway corridors, additional line capacity augmentation, station redevelopment, and modern rolling stock procurement. MUTP-II, with a project cost of Rs 8,080 crore, includes significant components like the 5th and 6th lines between CSMT and Kurla, and the 6th line between Mumbai Central and Borivli. MUTP-III, costing Rs 10,497 crore, involves the quadrupling of the Virar-Dahanu corridor, building a new suburban link between Panvel and Karjat, and acquiring 47 AC 12-car rakes. The largest project, MUTP-IIIA, with an estimated cost of Rs 33,690 crore, will extend the Harbour line to Borivli.
