Tiny Six-Week-Old Baby's Eye Surgery in Bengaluru Could Save His Sight!

September 20, 2025

Bengaluru witnessed a rare and inspiring medical story—a six-week-old baby underwent surgery to remove a dense cataract in one eye, making him one of the youngest patients ever to have this delicate operation! The talented ophthalmologist, Dr Sri Ganesh at Nethradhama Super Specialty Eye Hospital, Jayanagar, led this life-changing surgery. The baby was brought to the hospital at just five weeks old because of a white reflection, known as Leukocoria, in his right eye. Doctors scanned him and found a dense fibrous plaque blocking the eye's posterior capsule. This was no ordinary problem; if left untreated, it could cause amblyopia or 'lazy eye,' where the brain stops processing signals from the affected eye, leading to permanent vision loss. To fight this threat, doctors acted swiftly. The surgery was performed under paediatric anaesthesia, where Dr Ganesh carefully peeled away the dense plaque and took extra steps to keep the visual path clear. But the journey isn't over! Once the baby grows a bit more, around 6-8 months old, an artificial lens will be implanted to replace the cloudy natural lens. In the meantime, the medical team is helping the baby's vision grow stronger by using special patching techniques. Dr Sri Ganesh highlighted the magic of early diagnosis: "Any delays in treatment will cause vision development problems, especially if the condition is present in one eye. Delay in intervention can lead to blindness," he warned. He stressed, "As soon as the baby is born, eye screening must be done. If parents or doctors notice any white reflex in the eyes, they should immediately consult an eye specialist." This story is a shining example of how early eye check-ups and quick action can save a child's world of colors and sights. So, parents and doctors, keep your eyes wide open—literally—for early signs to protect precious vision!
