Mbappe Shines Again as Real Madrid Crush Espanyol to Stay Top in La Liga

September 21, 2025

Real Madrid is on fire! The La Liga giants, coached by Xabi Alonso, continue their winning streak after beating Espanyol 2-0 on Saturday. The star striker Kylian Mbappe netted another goal, making it five goals in five league games. Talk about hot form! The first goal came from Real’s defender Eder Militao, who smashed a powerful shot from far away just 22 minutes into the match. Then, soon after the break, Mbappe fired a stunning shot from outside the box to double the lead. Real Madrid’s English midfielder Jude Bellingham made a special return too, coming on as a substitute late in the game after recovering from shoulder surgery over the summer. Defender Dani Carvajal praised the team’s performance saying, "We can't be doing any better." He added, "The good thing is we're getting better at playing in the way the coach wants, understanding the concepts and the results are coming with that." Carvajal was also happy about Real’s strong defense. He said, "I think the performance was complete and we suffered very little in a defensive sense. We're leaving as leaders, we're still at the top of the table and our objective was completed." The coach Xabi Alonso brought Vinicius Junior back to the starting lineup and gave striker Gonzalo Garcia a rare chance to shine. Although Vinicius is still finding his best form and was benched a few times, he created the assist for Mbappe’s second goal by sliding a perfect pass. After that goal, Real Madrid clearly took control of the game. Espanyol, a team that has not beaten Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu since 1996, started the season strongly but faced a tough reality check against the capital club. Despite lots of pressure, Espanyol’s goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic did well to stop some shots. However, Militao’s long-range thunderbolt and Mbappe’s razor-sharp strike sealed the win for Madrid. Madrid’s perfect league start has them five points ahead of their arch-rivals Barcelona, who will try to catch up when they play Getafe. Meanwhile, Girona got a shocking defeat at home, losing 4-0 to Levante while ending the match with just nine men. Girona, who finished third last season, are now at the bottom of the table with no wins. Their coach Michel Sanchez admitted: "After five weeks we are the worst team in the league and all we can do is work hard. I have to improve this team and I will do it. It will be tricky to get out of this situation, but we're not giving up."
