The Montreal Canadiens kicked off their NHL preseason with a sparkling win against the Pittsburgh Penguins, much to the delight of their fans at the Bell Centre! The spotlight was stolen by young goalie Jacob Fowler, who made his preseason debut look like a blockbuster performance. Starting in the second period with the Canadiens trailing 1-0, Fowler jumped into action just as Penguins forward Valtteri Puustinen launched a breakaway shot aimed right between the goalie’s legs. But guess what? Fowler blocked it with flair, sending the crowd into a frenzy! Fowler didn’t stop there. He stayed cool as ice, making several vital saves and keeping the score even. In the nail-biting overtime, he spectacularly denied a two-on-one chance, sprawling to stop Avery Hayes. Overall, he stopped all 13 shots faced during his play, proving why he's a top prospect for Montreal. Before Fowler’s heroics, Samuel Montembeault was on the ice during the first period, marking his return after a hamstring injury from last season. Montembeault faced an intense 21 shots and saved 20, giving Montreal a confident start and showing that he’s back in shape and ready to lead. The action heated up early in the third period when Owen Beck scored a crucial goal from his own rebound, sliding the puck into an open net to tie the game. The tension remained high, but neither team scored again, pushing the game into overtime. The grand finale came in the shootout! Fowler once again dazzled by stopping four out of five Penguins shooters, while Oliver Kapanen sealed the thrilling 2-1 victory with the winning shootout goal. Fans at the Bell Centre left buzzing about the Canadiens' depth and promise for the coming season.
