India is on fire with a big green dream! Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s eye-catching plan, India wants to reach a whopping 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. This means a huge boost in solar and wind power all over the country. Imagine powering millions of homes and factories with clean, green energy — that’s the goal! Sumant Sinha, CEO of ReNew Energy, spoke at the Bloomberg Green event during New York Climate Week. ReNew Energy is no small player; it's India’s second-largest renewable company and is growing fast. Over the past year, their solar and wind farms grew by 20%. Sinha said, “We have a path we are following that is our own.” He is confident India will meet or nearly meet the 500 GW target by 2030 or 2031. Sinha also shared a spicy comment about global moves: China has announced a small cut in emissions by 2035, but many find it underwhelming. India and the European Union still need to give their new climate targets before the key UN climate summit, COP30, this November in Brazil. He explained how India’s clean energy push stands strong even with challenges. “We don’t like external pressure,” he said, but “the reality for countries like India and China is that clean energy is the way forward.” Plus, India has smart tricks up its sleeve! Using reverse auctions, India pushed solar prices down really fast. Also, subsidy stacking helped produce the cheapest green ammonia worldwide. India is careful not to shift its reliance from fossil fuels to importing solar gear from China. Thanks to tariffs on Chinese solar panels, Indian companies like ReNew are building solar parts at home. “Nobody can compete with China on solar equipment,” Sinha admitted, but that hasn’t stopped India from trying. Investors are excited too! Unlike the US, where new power is mostly for data centers, India’s power demand grows 6% yearly, mostly for homes and industries. That means diverse opportunities. Sinha is already chatting with tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google to learn about their India plans. Will this spark even more renewable dreams? India seems all set to zoom ahead on clean power, lighting a green path for the world!
