Big news from the Indian defence front! The Indian Army has given a whopping Rs 30,000 crore tender to Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to buy new 'Anant Shastra' surface-to-air missile systems. This is a huge push towards ‘Made in India’ defence, as these missiles are developed by DRDO. Why is this exciting? The Anant Shastra systems will join hands with existing powerful systems like Akash and MRSAM to guard our skies along the tense borders with Pakistan and China. Indian Army sources told ANI that this project will equip five to six regiments with these mobile missile marvels. Earlier known as the Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile system, the Anant Shastra is fast and smart. It can search, track, and shoot targets even while moving – and can fire missiles during quick stops. With a range of around 30 km, it fits perfectly for short to medium-range defence, making the border air defence shield much stronger. This boost comes after the brave Indian Army Air Defence stopped Pakistan drone attacks during Operation Sindoor in May. The Army’s Air Defence units, using guns like the L-70 and Zu-23, along with the Akash and MRSAM missiles, defended the sky brilliantly – and they had support from the Indian Air Force’s Spyder and Sudarshan S-400 systems. Defence officials say the Anant Shastra’s performance passed tough day and night trials with flying colours. Once fully deployed, it will be stationed along the western and northern borders, working smoothly with other defence tech already in place. But wait, there’s more! Alongside missiles, new radars, very short-range defence systems, jammers, and laser-based tools are coming to tackle drones from Turkey and China, threatening our border security. Top boss Gen Upendra Dwivedi has been all for boosting indigenous technology in the Army. Future Indian-made projects include the Zorawar light tank and other air defence systems. The message is clear – Make in India is the need of the hour, and Anant Shastra is leading the way in the sky!
