Big news in Delhi’s legal corridors! The Central Government has rejigged the calendar for India’s top lawyer, Senior Advocate R. Venkataramani. The Ministry of Law and Justice announced a sparkling update: “The President of India has re-appointed R. Venkataramani, Senior Advocate, as Attorney General for India for a further period of two years with effect from 01.10.2025.” What does this mean? Originally sworn in for three years back in October 2022, Venkataramani’s first tenure was set to expire on September 30, 2025. But hold on! With this fresh nod of approval, the veteran lawyer will now keep wearing the prestigious Attorney General hat till September 30, 2027. Who is the Attorney General anyway? The Attorney General is the highest law officer in the Union Government, serving as the chief legal advisor to the government. This top honcho is chosen by the President of India under Article 76(1) of the Constitution and works on the President's pleasure but only after the Union Cabinet gives a thumbs up. With more than four decades of legal wisdom, Venkataramani is armed to continue guiding the government in its toughest legal battles. This extension means the government trusts his sharp mind and steady hand for two more years in this crucial post. So, legal buffs and citizens, brace yourselves! R. Venkataramani’s saga as the country’s top lawyer gets to shine till 2027!
