UoH Students Join Telangana Bandh, Demand 42% Backward Class Quota in Education, Jobs, and Polls

October 18, 2025

On Saturday, the campus of the University of Hyderabad turned into a hub of fiery activism as students rallied for a huge cause! They joined the State-wide bandh, demanding a 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BC) in education, jobs, and local body elections. This wasn’t just a shout in the air, but a fight backed by facts — the caste survey data and strong principles like equality, representation, and social justice. G. Kiran Kumar, the president of the All India OBC Students’ Association, voiced the core demand clearly. He urged, "The Central government approve the Telangana Bills providing 42% BC reservations and include them in the ninth schedule of the Constitution to safeguard them from judicial challenges." This move would shield these reservations from court hurdles and secure the rights for BCs. The protesters didn’t hold back their criticism either. They slammed the government’s decision to cross the 50% reservation mark for economically weaker sections while keeping OBCs out in the cold. According to them, this showed a clear bias that ignored the rightful share of OBC communities. The bandh was not just a lone cry but a powerful chorus involving many student organizations. Groups like AIOBCSA, AISA, ASA, BSF, DSU, FRATERNITY, MSF, NSUI, PDSU, and TSF all marched together, showing strong unity in their call for justice. With such a vibrant and united protest, the students of UoH and their allies have made it crystal clear – the demand for 42% BC reservation is rooted deeply in justice and fairness. Will the government listen and act? Time will tell, but the voices on the streets have already made a thundering bang!
