India and EU Race to Seal Trade Deal by December, A Big Boost for Goods and Services

October 23, 2025

Get ready for a thrilling trade tango between India and the European Union! Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently sat down with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic to iron out the tricky parts of their proposed trade deal. Why all the buzz? Because Goyal is set to visit Brussels next week, eager to speed up the negotiations. This isn’t a quick chat; it follows a solid 14th round of talks that wrapped up in early October. Plus, India’s Commerce Secretary, Rajesh Agrawal, also held key discussions with top EU trade officials in Brussels. With so much happening, both sides have set a bold goal: finish talks by December! The backdrop to this exciting push is a pact that paused way back in 2013 due to market disagreements. But since June 2022, India and the EU started fresh, working on a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA), an investment protection deal, and a pact on geographical signs. Why should you care? India’s trade with the EU is massive — goods worth USD 136.53 billion flowed between them in 2024-25. The EU is India’s largest trading buddy for goods, soaking up 17% of India’s exports. The trade deal could cut hefty duties, especially on cars and medical devices, plus slash taxes on wines, meats, and spirits. The EU also seeks a stronger intellectual property regime. For India, the sweets in the trade basket include competitively priced ready-made garments, pharma products, steel, petroleum, and electrical machinery exports. Its 23-chapter negotiation menu covers everything from goods and services to rules of origin, customs, competition, and sustainable development. As the countdown to December ticks, will this mega deal unlock fresh trade fortunes? Stay tuned as India and the EU spice up their partnership with a deal everyone’s eager to taste!
