US President Donald Trump made a shocking announcement on Thursday, saying all trade talks with Canada are now over. Why? He is furious about a so-called fraudulent ad that features former President Ronald Reagan speaking against tariffs. Trump wrote on Truth Social, "Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED." The ad, which caught Trump's attention, showed Reagan criticizing tariffs, saying they caused job losses and trade wars. Ontario Premier Doug Ford explained earlier in the week, "I heard that the president heard our ad. I’m sure he wasn’t too happy." The ad's anti-tariff message clearly hit a nerve with Trump. Trump is known for using tariffs as a strong weapon in global trade. His tariff war has pushed US tariffs to their highest since the 1930s, making businesses and economists anxious. Earlier this year, Trump placed tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and autos, and Canada struck back with its own duties. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded on Thursday, saying Canada "will not allow unfair US access to its markets if talks on various trade deals with Washington fail." This means Canada is ready to stand firm. The two countries have been in talks for weeks, trying to sort out deals for steel and aluminum. And there's even more at stake next year when the US, Canada, and Mexico will review their 2020 continental free-trade agreement. With tempers flaring and tariffs flying, the future of US-Canada trade looks stormy. Will cooler heads prevail or will this trade war heat up? Stay tuned!
