Hold on tight, Odisha! Mother Nature is stirring up a fierce cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal, shaking the state with heavy rains and gusty winds starting October 27. While the cyclone might skip a direct landfall, it promises widespread downpours that could drench coastal and southern districts. Revenue & Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari painted a picture of readiness, assuring, "Odisha is highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as heavy rainfall, flooding, river swelling, and cyclones. We are preparing for an impending cyclonic storm predicted to hit its coast on the 22nd or 29th. Departments, including Health, Water Resources, Energy, and Agriculture, are fully prepared. Local Administrations across Odisha, especially in vulnerable areas, have made arrangements for relief centres, evacuation, and the provision of essential supplies. We urge people not to panic as we are fully prepared." His words bring confidence that the state is on top of the unfolding weather drama. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) revealed that a low-pressure area formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal on October 24. This system is no ordinary cloud—it is progressing fast! Expected to become a depression by October 25, then a deep depression by October 26, and finally a cyclonic storm by October 27. The storm is likely to drift towards Andhra Pradesh's coast but will still splash Odisha with heavy showers. IMD Bhubaneswar Director Manorama Mohanty gave a sharp warning: "There is a low-pressure system formed south of the Bay of Bengal... It is likely to form into a depression over the southeast and the adjoining Bay of Bengal on October 25. It will also further intensify into a deep depression by October 26. And into a cyclonic storm by October 27. Odisha is likely to experience heavy rainfall activity on 27, 28 and 29 October. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea from 26th onwards..." Strong winds along Odisha’s south coast are already expected to pick up pace, hitting speeds of 40-50 kmph with gusts up to 60 kmph. The IMD has issued a yellow alert statewide—kind of like a weather yellow flag waving to say, "Be Alert!" Meanwhile, shifts are already happening on the water. Thoothukudi has stopped fishing activities, with officials urging fishermen to stay safe on land. Boats at sea have been called back immediately, and no new sea trips should happen while the cyclone alert buzzes loud. Coastal residents are also warned to stay away from the shore and keep close tabs on weather updates. So, the message is clear: Odisha is ready, nature is stirring, and everyone should be alert, stay safe, and keep an eye on the skies as the cyclone drama unfolds.
