Samsung in Hot Talks to Supply Next-Gen HBM4 Chips to Nvidia, Eyes AI Chip Race Comeback

November 1, 2025

Samsung Electronics is bursting back into the AI chip race! On Friday, Samsung announced it's in “close discussion” to supply its shiny next-generation high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, called HBM4, to Nvidia. This is a bold move as Samsung wants to catch up with rivals electrifying the AI world. Samsung plans to launch these new chips next year but hasn’t said exactly when shipments will start. The stage is buzzing as South Korea's local rival, SK Hynix, Nvidia's main HBM chip supplier, revealed it wants to begin shipping its own fresh HBM4 chips in the fourth quarter this year, with bigger sales planned for next year. Nvidia also chimed in, saying they are in “key supply collaboration for HBM3E and HBM4” with Samsung and other Korean companies, though they kept the details under wraps. Samsung has been slower on the AI memory boom than the competition. This lag made its earnings weaker and even led to a reshuffle in its chip division last year. However, Samsung is bouncing back this quarter, thanks to steady demand for regular memory chips. This week, Samsung said it’s already selling its current HBM3E chips to “all related customers,” showing it has jumped into the latest action by supplying Nvidia with advanced 12-layer HBM3E chips. Experts say the launch of HBM4 chips will be the ultimate test for Samsung to reclaim its crown in memory technology. But what is HBM anyway? It’s a type of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) made by stacking chips vertically — a space-saving and power-sipping wonder that helps AI processors handle huge loads of data. First built in 2013, HBM continues to power the complex brains behind AI applications. With this new push, Samsung is hoping its HBM4 chips will dazzle in the AI world, drawing attention and business away from rivals and marking its strong comeback in the sizzling high-tech memory chip market.
