Guru Nanak, born on November 5, 1469, is the first and most loved Guru of the Sikhs. His contribution to faith is immeasurable. Prof. Kumool Abbi says, "He had a simple, efficacious and profound approach to God, where faith and virtuous living go hand in hand." After a divine experience, Nanak wrote the famous Jaapji Sahib. In this, he teaches about the one creator – ek, the true name – satnaam, the doer – kartapurakh, fearless – nirbhau, and without enemies – nirvair. His main teaching is naam simran, which means reciting the name of the beloved Lord. Guru Nanak’s inspiring Bani (sacred hymns) includes Japuji Sahib, Asa di Vaar, Sidh Goshti, and nearly 900 shabads found in the Shri Guru Granth Sahibji. These hymns are full of joy and love for God, guiding the soul toward bliss and union with the divine. Such bhakti (devotion) brightens life, helps beat boredom, and calms suffering by controlling bad desires and vices. Guru Purab’s teachings remind us, "Just as he has attained the Lord, all of us shall too." He teaches that God lives in everyone, no matter who they are, and everyone is born to adore and love Him. Guru Nanak urged people to live honest and harmonious lives. He stressed daily naam simran and said we must work hard and earn honestly, called kirat karo. Sharing with society, known as vand chako, is also important to him. His lessons are not just for reading or talking; they must be lived in real life. He freed people from rigid rituals, superstitions, and empty traditions. The powerful message of Guru Nanak is still relevant today: social justice, human rights, gender equality, peace, love, brotherhood, and equality for all. His words shine as bright as ever, lighting the way for a better and fairer world.
