Manipur IDPs Protest Rs 84 Daily Allowance, Call It Impossible to Live On

November 7, 2025

The internally displaced people (IDPs) of Manipur are up in arms! On Wednesday, they loudly protested against the government’s decision to give just Rs 84 per person daily as allowance. "It is not possible to live with this amount of money," they said, showing their frustration. The angry crowd marched from Shajiwa to the Sawoungbung sub divisional officer's office in Imphal East. Similar protests were seen across many relief camps too. Here's the big change: The government’s new plan, shared through an office memo by chief secretary PK Goel, stops giving relief materials like rice, dal, water, and basic household items from October 31, 2025. Instead, starting November 1, each displaced family head will get money directly into their bank accounts — Rs 84 per day. Why this switch? Officials say it will make the relief process more transparent and flexible. They want families to have the freedom to choose what they buy instead of receiving fixed supplies. To keep things clean and clear, the district administration is asked to create a digital list of all people living in camps. This list must be checked against official IDs like Aadhaar cards or voter IDs. But for the IDPs, Rs 84 a day feels like a drop in the ocean. They are worried if such a tiny amount can really cover their day-to-day needs. The protest sends a loud message: The people want fair relief and respect for their tough lives.
