Bodh Gaya Assembly Battle: Shyam Deo Paswan Faces Double Trouble from RJD and NDA Rebels

November 7, 2025

Gaya: The buzzing Bodh Gaya assembly seat is spilling over with drama! The main fight is between RJD’s Kumar Sarvajeet and LJP(RV)’s Shyam Deo Paswan, but Paswan is not just facing his RJD rival. He’s also battling two NDA rebels from the strong Mushar caste, a key dalit group. Can you believe it? Since 1972, Paswans have been winning here more than any other caste — nine times out of 14! Mushars and Ravidas, the other dalit groups, bagged five wins. This time, the competition is fierce with 10 candidates fighting for the seat. Kumar Sarvajeet is not new to this scene. He’s been MLA for the last 10 years, winning three out of four tries. Shyam Deo Paswan also has a history here, winning once back in 2010 on a BJP ticket. What’s fueling the fire in this election? The big issue is the Buddhist corridor plan, which may push the locals out of their homes. Suresh Singh from Bodh Gaya Nagar Vikas Manch shares local fears: “People can not afford another round of displacement. The Buddhist Corridor scheme has been initiated without keeping the stakeholders in the loop.” Since 1964, locals have faced five displacements, including a massive one after a terrorist attack in 2013. Tourism is Bodh Gaya’s lifeline, but the state’s liquor ban hurts badly. Singh points out, “Prohibition has delivered a deadly blow to the local economy. Foreign tourists want to leave early because of no liquor, choosing nearby Varanasi instead. Nitish Kumar govt is responsible for the loss to the tourism sector in Bodh Gaya.” Locals want a smooth, polished MLA because of the international spotlight on Bodh Gaya. A rustic, rough image won’t work here, they say. Politics inside the NDA adds more spice! Former Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi’s support can make or break Shyam Deo Paswan. Manjhi and Chirag Paswan, LJP(RV) chief, are rivals in dalit politics. Plus, Manjhi’s supporters suspect that Shyam Deo tried to sabotage Manjhi’s chances in the last parliamentary elections. Two of Manjhi’s old aides are running as NDA rebels — one as an Independent and another under Jan Suraaj. A senior LJP(RV) leader hints, “The rebellion was orchestrated, as the so-called rebels enjoyed tacit blessings of Manjhi.” So, what’s the takeaway? The battle in Bodh Gaya isn’t just about one seat. The election might decide the future friendship or feud between NDA partners in Bihar. Get ready for a thrilling political show in this sacred town!
