OpenAI CFO Sparks Buzz: Could US Govt Back AI Funding? CEO Sam Altman Says No Bailout Needed!
November 8, 2025
OpenAI’s top bosses hurried to calm nerves after their Chief Financial Officer, Sarah Friar, suggested that the US government might help support the company’s huge funding plans. Friar sparked a storm when she mentioned "backstop" at a tech conference, hinting government aid might back OpenAI's expensive AI growth journey.
At a Wall Street Journal event in Napa, California, Sarah said, "This is where we're looking for an ecosystem of banks, private equity, maybe even governmental, the ways governments can come to bear."
She explained this "backstop" would act as a guarantee, helping OpenAI secure big financing. But this set off alarm bells. The AI world is already pouring billions into data centers and tech gear. Giants like Meta, Google, and Microsoft are racing to expand their AI power, sparking fears of a finance bubble and doubts if AI can soon pay back these massive investments.
Critics warn the AI funding scene looks like a circle of cash swaps—chip makers, data centers, and AI labs lending and sharing stock with no clear payoff yet.
On Wednesday night, Friar cleared the fog in a LinkedIn post: she said the word "backstop" ‘‘muddied the point’’ and wanted to highlight that America’s tech strength needs both private companies and government to team up.
The next day, David Sacks, White House AI and crypto expert, stepped in firmly: "The US has at least 5 major frontier model companies. If one fails, others will take its place," he tweeted, rejecting bailout ideas.
Later Thursday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made it crystal clear: "We do not have or want government guarantees for OpenAI data centres." No government safety nets here, he said.
So, what’s the real story? OpenAI is chasing big dreams with costly AI infrastructure. Yes, they hope for creative funding, but the government won’t be handing out any financial umbrellas. The AI race is blazing ahead—can it keep up with its sky-high price tag? Tech watchers, keep your popcorn ready!
