India’s cricket captain Shubman Gill will miss the second and final Test against South Africa due to a neck injury. The official announcement came from the Indian cricket board (BCCI) on Friday. This is a major blow for India! Gill hurt his neck during the first innings of the opening Test played in Kolkata. He had to retire hurt and did not come out to bat again in the second innings. South Africa took full advantage and defeated India inside three days at Eden Gardens. After the hospital discharge in Kolkata, Gill travelled to Guwahati hoping to play the next Test. But sadly, he was not fit enough to take part in the match at the Barsapara Stadium. The BCCI said, "Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the second test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment of his injury." So who will lead India now? The answer is wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant. The BCCI confirmed, "Rishabh Pant will lead the team in the second test in Gill's absence." In the first Test at Kolkata, India had a tough time against South Africa’s off-spinner Simon Harmer. He took a total of eight wickets, helping South Africa dominate. India’s batting in Kolkata was unusual as there were six left-handed batsmen. This may affect the team selection going forward. There is talk that India might replace Gill with right-handed batsman Nitish Kumar Reddy instead of Sai Sudharsan. When asked, Pant kept the team secret, saying, "See, we have taken that in consideration ... but we're going to announce it tomorrow. The person who's going to play, he already knows he's going to play." Pant expressed pride about leading India but stayed humble about the responsibility. He said, "I'm really proud that BCCI has given me this opportunity. Whenever you are leading your country is the proudest moment, especially in test cricket. At the same time, I don't want to think too much about it. I don't want to take that undue pressure of captaincy in my mind. I just want to keep things simple." So cricket fans, get ready for an exciting contest in Guwahati as India chases to level this Test series without their skipper Shubman Gill!
