The Thiruvanmiyur police, part of the Greater Chennai City Police, recently thwarted a gang from Uttar Pradesh suspected of employing an unconventional method to carry out ATM thefts in various parts of Tamil Nadu. The incident came to light when a customer tried to withdraw ₹1,500 from a State Bank of India (SBI) ATM in Thiruvalluvar Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, only to receive a text message confirming the debit without any cash dispensed. Multiple customers faced the same issue until the authorities intervened. K. Naren Kumar, from the Hitachi ATM service, discovered that the cash dispenser was obstructed with a black cardboard material from the inside. Subsequently, three suspects – Kuldeep Singh, Brijbhan, and Sumit Yadav from Uttar Pradesh – were arrested under the Thiruvanmiyur police jurisdiction. The gang's modus operandi involved placing a black cardboard in the cash dispenser after opening the ATM with their own key. They would then wait for the customers to leave before returning to steal the trapped cash. The gang has reportedly carried out similar thefts in Vandalur, Chennai city, and nearby areas over the past three months. While no complaints have been lodged regarding monetary losses, the police are continuing their investigation to determine the full extent of the gang's activities and any potential accomplices. The authorities seized a key, black cardboard material, and double-sided tapes from the accused.
