BJP Blasts Mamata Banerjee Government for Intimidating Election Officials in West Bengal's SIR
November 22, 2025
The political storm is brewing in West Bengal as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a fiery attack against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s state government. On Friday, BJP spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan accused the Mamata administration of bullying Election Commission of India (ECI) officers involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The BJP claims that booth-level officers (BLOs), who are crucial in updating voter lists, are being intimidated and stopped from doing their work properly. "There have been reports of a bunch of nurtured goons threatening the BLOs, impeding their constitutional work," said Paswan. He warned that if Mamata Banerjee believes she "can threadbare the Constitution using her goon," she is mistaken. Highlighting West Bengal's past violence, he added, "We have seen the record of your Jungle Raj and violence."
This fresh row erupted just a day after Mamata Banerjee wrote a strong letter to the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She painted a grim picture, saying the situation had become "alarming" because of the "unplanned, chaotic and dangerous" SIR process. She stressed that extreme pressure on officials had even caused several BLOs to die. Fear of punishment was forcing others to submit wrong or partial data, risking genuine voters losing their rights and spoiling the electoral rolls.
In her urgent plea, Mamata requested the Election Commission to "halt the ongoing exercise, stop coercive measures, provide proper training and support, and thoroughly reassess the present methodology and timelines." She warned, "If this path is not corrected without delay, the consequences, for the system, the officials, and the citizens, will be irreversible."
The Trinamool Congress supported this claim, stating that 28 deaths and two suicides had occurred linked to SIR-related stress. The state government blamed the rush to complete SIR for the heavy pressure on workers.
Not backing down, the BJP fired back, saying Mamata had no right to criticize the Election Commission. They pointed out the smooth completion of SIR in Bihar as proof that the process can be handled well. Paswan challenged, "If the SIR is taking place smoothly in other states, then who is Mamata Banerjee to impede the constitutional process in the state?"
Adding fuel to fire, Paswan pointed to reports of people caught crossing the India-Bangladesh border amid worries over SIR. He claimed, "This proves that the Mamata Banerjee government had turned the infiltrators into vote banks. This is an extreme case of political appeasement."
Calling on the Election Commission to act decisively, Paswan said, "If there is a need then deploy security forces in the state and embolden the administrative machinery" to ensure that the SIR goes on without any interruption.
Meanwhile, a booth level officer was seen busy helping voters fill forms for the revision in Malda district on November 18, showing how critical this process is on the ground.
The election season in West Bengal is heating up like a spicy curry, with BJP and Mamata’s Trinamool Congress clashing over the very heart of democracy—the voters' list!
