Bangladesh Warns of Action If Government Autonomy is Obstructed

May 27, 2025

The Bangladesh interim government has issued a warning, stating that it will take action alongside the people if the government's ability to fulfill its responsibilities is compromised due to external influences. This statement follows escalating tensions between Bangladesh chief adviser Muhammad Yunus and the military leadership. The dispute stems from a controversial proposal regarding a "humanitarian corridor" to Myanmar and conflicting reports about Yunus considering resignation. The council of advisers emphasized the government's commitment to autonomy, reform efforts, justice, fair elections, and normal operations. They declared that if these responsibilities are jeopardized by defeated forces or foreign conspiracies, the government will communicate the reasons to the public and act accordingly with the support of the people. Yunus, known for his integrity, has set a deadline for the national election, dismissing demands from major national parties to hold it earlier. The political landscape remains tense as parties hold separate discussions with Yunus regarding election timelines and strategies. The National Citizen Party's call for local government elections prior to the national election is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its position at the grassroots level before the national poll.
