MeitY's Big Push: India Creates 20% of World Data, But Can Store Just 4%!
November 27, 2025
In Chennai, S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), unveiled a bronze statue of the legendary Mrs. YGP during her grand centenary celebrations on Wednesday. With great energy, he highlighted a big challenge India faces today — it produces a massive 20% of the world's data but has the capacity to store only 4%! “Unless we create capacity, we can’t even store the data. At the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, it is our top priority to see how we build this strength over a period of time in every space,” said Mr. Krishnan. He painted a changing world picture. Earlier, there was free trade and exchange, but now, trade barriers and restrictions have taken over. This means India must become more resilient at every level. Remembering Mrs. YGP's dedication to promoting pure science and mathematics among youngsters, he said this foundation is key for research. India's current investment stands at 0.7% of its GDP in research and development, but sadly, 0.6% of this is government spending, showing room to grow. Sridhar Vembu, Founder and Chief Scientist of Zoho Corporation, added an inspiring comparison. "Israel, with a population smaller than Chennai’s, invests a whopping 6% of its GDP in research and development," he said. Technologies from Israel support farming in tough dry areas of Tamil Nadu, showing how innovation can help real life. When asked about Zoho's future plans, Dr. Sridhar shared exciting news: "My company plans to launch a marketing campaign in about a month for our new messaging and calling app, Arattai." He closed with wise words, “All good things take time. To build anything that truly lasts, takes time.” The event also honoured five remarkable alumni from Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Group of Schools — Air Marshal P.V. Shivanand of the Indian Air Force, Major General Praveen Badrinath of the Indian Army, Commodore Sreekumar Srinivasan of the Indian Navy, historian Chithra Madhavan, and educationist S. Vaidhyasubramaniam. Lakshmi Devanath, Mrs. YGP’s biographer, received special acclaim too. Sheela Rajendra, the Dean and Director of the Padma Seshadri Group of Schools, addressed the gathering, making sure the spirit of Mrs. YGP’s legacy shined bright on this celebration day.
