Karnataka's Maternal Mortality Ratio Decreases to 63 per Lakh Live Births

May 9, 2025

Karnataka's Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has decreased to 63 per lakh live births in 2019-21, signifying progress in reducing maternal deaths during childbirth. The state's MMR had been on a decline since 2016, with challenges persisting in 2019-21 possibly due to the pandemic impact. Although having the highest MMR among southern states, Karnataka has observed the most substantial decrease in MMR. Collective efforts of health workers, political commitment, governance improvements, and accountability systems have contributed to this positive trend. Strategic investments and policy focus have also played a crucial role in achieving this milestone. The state continues its mission to further reduce maternal deaths with the support of field workers, doctors, and the public.
