Nights in Hyderabad and Telangana are about to get colder from December 15 and will stay cool till the first week of January—this is the 'peak winter' season, say the weather experts at Telangana Developing and Planning Society (TGDPS). Expect minimum temperatures between 12°C to 17°C in districts, and a slightly milder 15°C to 18°C in the twin cities. Earlier this month, we had a glimpse of the cold, but then temperatures warmed up a bit. In recent days, the mercury hovered between 14°C to 19°C across districts and 16°C to 21°C in the twin cities. What's behind the temporary warm-up? Senior weather consultant Y.V. Rama Rao points to easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal and two low-pressure cyclone systems stirring things up. But worry not! These warmer days won't last long. "With little chance of cold northern winds and scarce rain over the next 10 days, temperatures will be slightly above normal for now," says Mr. Rama Rao. The real chill hits after December 15 when strong northern winds start blowing into Telangana, bringing the mercury down, although keeping it within normal ranges. Daytime temperatures will be cozy, ranging from 30°C to 33°C in districts and 28°C to 31°C in Hyderabad. What about the famous La Nina effect? "The La Nina phenomenon—cooler waters in the equatorial Pacific Ocean—might keep minimum temperatures a bit higher than usual," Mr. Rao explains. Still, be ready for sudden cold wave bursts as northern winds sweep through central areas like Medak, Sangareddy, Warangal, and Khammam, and northern parts such as Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, bringing noticeable dips in temperature. Looking back at the last decade, minimum temperatures have mostly stayed within a comfortable range of 16°C to 18°C, with rare dips. The coldest recorded minimum was 7°C at Moinabad in Rangareddy district on November 20, 2016. So, while Hyderabad and Telangana won’t face extreme cold, the coming weeks promise delightful winter vibes with cool nights and warm days. Perfect chai weather, isn’t it?
