HYDERABAD – A unique event took off at the Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) in Hyderabad on Friday. Called 'Tales Below the Heels,' this three-day national seminar and exhibition dives into India’s amazing footwear heritage. What’s so special about this? It paints a vibrant picture of the history hidden right under our feet! The event was proudly inaugurated by Governor Jishnu Dev Varma. In his inspiring speech, he pointed out an interesting fact: "We study the posture, ornaments, and the symbolism of our sculptures, but we rarely pause to notice what lies below the heels." He stressed that traditional studies often skip over footwear, though it’s closely connected to our culture. "This exhibition fills that gap and brings to light a dimension of our cultural heritage that has been hidden in plain sight," he explained. Governor Varma also had a bright idea for the future. He suggested that 'Tales Below the Heels' could become a travelling exhibition. Imagine people all over India getting a chance to witness these fascinating stories and the rich history captured in footwear, which is both everyday and deeply cultural. The seminar and exhibition were organized together by the Footwear Design and Development Institute and the Pleach India Foundation. For three days, visitors can explore how footwear is not just about style but a treasure trove of stories reflecting India’s diverse traditions and history. So, next time you look down at your shoes, remember—they might be carrying much more than just your steps! This event is a beautiful reminder that culture can be found in the most unexpected places, like 'below the heels.'
