GCTO Protests Kannur University’s Saturday Exams, Citing Rule Violations
December 1, 2025
The Government College Teacher’s Organisation (GCTO) has charged Kannur University with violating UGC regulations and state rules by scheduling university exams on two Saturdays in December. Dr. Mummad Ashfas, State vice president of GCTO, said the government allows only five working days per week. Saturdays can be working days only in emergencies like natural disasters. "Conducting exams on Saturday without such circumstances is neither academically nor legally acceptable," he said.
Dr. Ashfas explained that technical faults in the K-REAP software delayed students' exam registrations. This forced the university to postpone November exams twice and reschedule them to December. The K-REAP system, run through MKCL, has caused ongoing technical problems and stress for teachers and students. The recent exam schedule shows the same carelessness.
Usually, university exams have a day gap between papers following a Monday-Wednesday-Friday pattern. But the new timetable was changed without reason to Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday.
GCTO declared it will not cooperate with the exam on Saturday, December 6. Teachers will not report to colleges that day. The organisation urged all college teachers to join the protest and support the non-cooperation movement.
