A 20-year-old Rohingya refugee and domestic help in Bengaluru was allegedly raped at knife point by her neighbour on November 9. The victim, a mother of two children, said the accused and their family are threatening her to withdraw the complaint by offering ₹5 lakh and threatening to kill her. The woman, who lives in Bengaluru with her husband, a ragpicker, and two children, told The Hindu that the accused—Rasel, Fakhrul, Suhak, and Alameen—are allegedly Bangladeshi migrants working in garbage collection. There was a rivalry between the accused and her husband and brother-in-law, which led to a fight. Her husband and brother-in-law were injured and taken to the hospital. On the night of the incident, the woman was home alone with her children. At around 2 a.m., the accused came to her house and asked her to go to the hospital with them, promising to cover all medical expenses. She refused to leave her children and said she would come the next day. The accused then forced her into a car with their associate Irfan and took her to an isolated place where they raped her at knife point. They later dropped her at home and warned her not to tell anyone. The woman filed a police complaint. Two accused were arrested, while others are still on the run. The family has UNHRC identity cards as Rohingya refugees and has been living in Bengaluru for five years. About 150 other Rohingya families live in Bengaluru doing menial jobs. Social activist Kaleemullah R. said the attack stems from rivalry between Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi illegal immigrants. Police have assured appropriate action in the case.
