On Wednesday, Karachi traffic police told the Sindh High Court that the e-challan system is active only on city roads where all infrastructure like lane markings and signs are fully ready. Roads still under construction are excluded until development finishes and upgrades happen. These details came from the deputy inspector general of traffic police in response to petitions against the e-challan rollout in Karachi. The police also said the provincial government allows a 50% discount if challans are paid within 14 days. They added that traffic courts are being set up for transparent handling. The two-judge bench led by Justice Yousuf Ali Sayeed took the comments on record and postponed the hearing to March 12. More time was given to file comments from other officials like the Sindh chief secretary, home secretary, and police leaders. Petitioners argued the AI-based e-challan was introduced without proper road infrastructure, vehicle verification systems, and other support. The case is ongoing as of February 19, 2026.
