Magnitude 3.5 Earthquake Hits Tibet, NCS Reports

May 31, 2025

An earthquake of magnitude 3.5 on the Richter Scale hit Tibet, according to the National Center for Seismology. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10km. The Tibetan Plateau experiences frequent seismic activity due to tectonic plate interactions. Shallow earthquakes, such as this one, are more concerning as they release more energy near the Earth's surface, leading to stronger ground shaking and increased structural damage. Regions like Tibet and Nepal, situated along a major geological fault line, often experience earthquakes. Marianne Karplus, a seismologist and geophysicist, emphasized the importance of earthquake education, resilient building construction, and scientific research to comprehend and prepare for earthquakes.
