India is gearing up to conduct its inaugural biological experiment on the International Space Station (ISS) to scrutinize the sustainability of life in space. The Ministry of Science & Technology revealed this ground-breaking initiative launched under the BioE3 Biotechnology policy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The experiment, set to take place during the Axiom-4 mission, is a collaboration between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT). Indian astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will be part of the crew for the mission. The project aims to study various growth parameters in different algal species in space compared to Earth-based controls to determine the most suitable microalgal species for space environments. Additionally, the experiment will examine the growth and response of cyanobacteria in microgravity using various nutrient media.
