A second Indian national has died from burn injuries sustained in a house fire in Albany, United States. The victim, Anvesh Sarapelli, passed away on Saturday. This comes a day after 24-year-old Sahaja Reddy Udumala, an Indian student, died from critical burns after the December 4 blaze. The Consulate General of India in New York expressed deep sorrow and is in contact with the families, offering full assistance. Udumala and Sarapelli were among four people rescued from a house near Quail Street where the fire broke out. Emergency teams treated all victims on site before taking them to Albany Medical Centre Hospital and later to the Westchester Medical Burn Centre. Police reported the residence was fully engulfed with several people trapped inside when they arrived. Both Udumala and Sarapelli later tragically died from their injuries. Sahaja Reddy Udumala, from Jodimetla near Uppal, Telangana, had completed a master’s in cyber security from the University at Albany and was working in the city. She was asleep after a night shift when the fire started near her room, rapidly spreading and causing burns to nearly 90% of her body, leading to organ failure. The fire began around 11:40 am and quickly spread to an adjacent building. Fire Chief Joseph Gregory called the scene a “wall of fire” and praised firefighters for battling tough weather and strong winds to rescue residents. Thirteen people, including many University at Albany students, were displaced. A dog was also rescued. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by Udumala’s cousin to help with funeral and repatriation costs. The Telugu Association of North America and family members are arranging to bring her body back to Hyderabad. The New York State Fire Investigations Unit is investigating the cause of the fire.
