Forest Department Forms Committee After Leopard Kills Boy in Valparai
December 8, 2025
The Forest Department has set up a special committee to stop attacks between wild animals and humans on the Valparai plateau in Coimbatore. This move comes after a five-year-old boy was killed by a leopard in a tea estate near Iyerpadi on December 6. The committee was formed on December 7, led by S. Ramasubramanian, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. Other members include officials from Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Pollachi Sub-Collector, wildlife scientist T.R. Shankar Raman from the Nature Conservation Foundation, and local government officers.
The committee will carefully study the situation on the ground and suggest ways to improve safety and protect wildlife in Valparai. It must submit its report to the government within two weeks. This year, three children of migrant workers were unfortunately killed in attacks by leopards and sloth bears in the area under Anamalai Tiger Reserve’s limits. The committee aims to strengthen long-term safety and conservation measures to prevent such tragedies.
